If you have oily skin, achieving true radiance can seem like an elusive dream in the summer. All of the extra oil that the skin produces at this time of year tends to pave the path to a season of excess shine and grease.
The good news? Lavelier is here to help. Read on as we explain how to cut through the greasy finish that your skin often sports during the warmer months, so that you can then reveal and enhance your skin’s natural glow. Summer skincare is about to get a whole lot easier!
Double Cleanse in the Evenings
As you’ll likely know, oily skin needs to be cleansed regularly. Ideally, this should be limited to twice a day – over-cleansing can quickly damage the skin’s natural barrier, which will make your oiliness worse in the long run.
However, in the summer months, cleansing just twice a day may not seem enough, especially in the evenings after a hot and sweaty summer’s day. This is where double cleansing can be a huge game-changer…
This K-beauty technique involves cleansing your skin twice instead of just once. The first cleanse is done with an oil-based cleanser to tackle oil-based impurities, such as sebum. The second cleanse is done with a water-based cleanser, like the Lavelier Oceana Pore Perfection Polish. This tackles water-based impurities, like sweat. Combining two gentle cleansers in this way gives you a much more thorough cleanse, without harming your skin barrier. Not only will this significantly reduce how greasy your skin looks, but it will also ensure that the rest of your skincare products are able to properly penetrate your skin and bring out your gorgeous glow!
Exfoliate…But Don’t Go Overboard
Just like with over-cleansing, over-exfoliating can lead to some major problems, one of which is an increase in sebum production. This is the last thing that your oily skin needs, especially in the summer. This is why, although exfoliation should be an essential part of any summer skincare routine, it needs to be done carefully.
Start by making sure that you’re using the right exfoliator. There are so many excessively harsh exfoliators out there that are marketed toward people with oily skin. However, again, these often do more harm than good. Rather than blasting your skin with high concentrations of potent acids, go with a product that offers those same high-quality exfoliating ingredients but with a lighter touch. The Lavelier Oceana Refining Coral Peel, for instance, combines gentle alpha hydroxy acids with physical exfoliants, ensuring effective yet barrier-friendly exfoliation.
Then, make sure that you aren’t exfoliating too often. Three times a week should be your limit. Exfoliating more often than this will only leave your skin even oilier in the long run. Sticking to this schedule, combined with double cleansing in the evenings, should be enough to keep the shine away. If it’s not, move on to our next tip…
Manage Grease With the Right Mask
The right face mask can be a very useful addition to a summer skincare routine. Face masks are designed to serve a variety of purposes – find one that zaps away the appearance of grease and you’ll be left with a glow!
Clay masks tend to do this particularly well. Clay is an excellent ingredient for absorbing excess oil from the skin. When you later wash the clay off, you’ll also be washing away all of the oil that has adhered to it.
While there are plenty of clay masks out there to choose from, consider one that also offers thermal properties, like the Lavelier HydroTherm Intense Masque. Sure, you may not immediately gravitate toward a self-heating mask during the summer months, but the extra benefits that the mask’s warmth provides can really transform the complexion. The heat that this mask releases when it’s massaged into the skin leaves the pores feeling even more relaxed and dilated. This allows the clay to pull away a greater amount of oil, leaving your skin looking beautifully matte and radiant.
Sun Protection is Everything
If you’re searching for a glow this season, then your summer skincare routine needs to contain plenty of sun protection. The sun’s UV rays harm the skin in so many ways, making it impossible to achieve true radiance. If you want to keep your complexion free of dark spots, wrinkles, inflammation, and more, sun protection needs to be your focus.
The issue for those with oily skin is that many sunscreens can lead to clogged pores, which then cause breakouts. Fortunately, they aren’t all like that! There are plenty of lightweight SPF products out there. The key is finding one that offers broad-spectrum protection (this means that it protects against both UVA and UVB rays) with a minimum SPF of 30, while also working well with your skin type.
One worthy option to consider is the Lavelier Divine Day Defense SPF 30. It’s an exquisite lightweight moisturizer that also happens to offer SPF 30 sun protection. Apply it at the end of your morning summer skincare routine, and you can rest assured that your skin will be shielded from the sun for the next couple of hours. After that, just like any other sunscreen, you’ll need to reapply it. However, thanks to the numerous hydrating ingredients and antioxidants in this moisturizer, each application will do your skin so much good!
Keep Your Skin Well Hydrated
While people often associate skin dehydration with the dry winter months, it’s very easy for the skin to end up dehydrated in the summer too. Due to all of the excess heat and sun exposure it deals with, the skin barrier can sometimes struggle with moisture retention at this time of year.
If your skin is already prone to looking greasy, even a small amount of dehydration could be disastrous. Why? Because when the skin lacks moisture, it tries to overcompensate by producing even more oil! This only leaves the skin greasier than ever.
To prevent that from happening, make sure that your skin is kept sufficiently hydrated. Ideally, your summer skincare routine should provide hydration in every step. From a hydrating toner to a hydrating serum to a hydrating moisturizer, sandwiching hydration into your skin in this way will leave your skin feeling deeply quenched and much less greasy.
Add Retinol to Your Routine
Retinol is one of the most famous skincare ingredients around…and for good reason! It can help with a wide range of different skincare concerns, with excess grease and a lack of a glow being two of them!
By tightening the feel of the skin’s sebaceous glands, retinol can, in the long run, cut back on how oily your complexion is. It also has a brightening and rejuvenating effect on the appearance, making it a great one for really bringing out the skin’s glow.
With retinol being such a popular ingredient, there’s no shortage of retinol-infused summer skincare products out there. One of our favorites, however, is the Lavelier HydroTherm Completion Creme. Retinol can sometimes irritate the skin, but this moisturizer combines it with several complexion-soothing ingredients, including extracts from chamomile, cucumber, and coral seaweed. Meanwhile, it also contains some potent antioxidants – not just the retinol, but also from resveratrol and green tea extract.
If you happen to have oily yet sensitive skin that can’t tolerate retinol, consider retinyl palmitate instead. It’s a gentler derivative of vitamin A. This means that it takes longer to work, but it still produces very similar visible results. You’ll find retinyl palmitate in several Lavelier skincare products, including the Lavelier Oceana VitaGlow C-Serum.
Always Cleanse After Sweating
The heat of the summer usually means that people sweat much more. In many ways, this can actually be very beneficial for skin that’s susceptible to greasiness. Sweating helps to purge and clear out your pores, removing any debris that could have contributed to blockages and breakouts. Some studies have also found that sweat has antimicrobial properties. It’s able to kill certain types of bacteria and fungi, enabling the skin’s microbiome to flourish.
Does this mean that all of the sweating that you do in the summer is a good thing? Yes, but only in short bursts! Allow that sweat to linger on your skin, and all you’ll experience is clogged pores and other problems.
This is why it’s so important to cleanse your skin after you’ve been heavily sweating. If this means carrying out an extra cleanse each day, then do so with a very gentle cleanser to keep your skin barrier safe. The Lavelier Oceana Breezy Facial Cleanser is great for this!
Cut Back on the Makeup
Due to the extra sebum that your skin produces in the warmer months, it’s always advisable to keep your summer skincare routine minimal. This advice applies to your makeup routine too. Wearing heavy makeup when it’s hot and humid can quickly lead to clogged pores and breakouts. Plus, the more makeup you wear, the greater the chance that it will melt and crease in the heat, leaving you with a shiny and uneven finish.
Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean that you have to completely give up on makeup during the summer. Instead, look for lighter alternatives to your favorite products. For example, swap your heavy foundation for a lightweight BB cream. You’ll still be receiving coverage, but not so much that it interferes with your skin.
